What’s With the Winter?!

January’s SNO-M-G yielded a tribute to One Hit Wonder–Vanilla Ice-who’s song Ice Ice Baby was actually about Miami, FL–and being cold blooded–cuz there surely is no snow in Miami–or here.

February’s Chicago show–our 7 year Anniversary, is set in 1920s Chicago, IL–also a snowy place–was thwarted by a bunch of warm weather in February.

March– do I have to tell you it’s 70 out, I’m in shorts, a tank and slathered in sunblock? Well–I am. And that’s because in the 80 degree weather yesterday, I was overheating so badly that I nearly passed out in my sweatpants!

Ken Vegas-DC King Daddy

Last Night, the DC Kings and the DC Gurly Show came together at Phase 1, not only for a great drag king show (including Lexie Starre, Sugar Cane and Private Tails–and future Gurlies, Duncan Deeply and Butta), but to celebrate Ken Vegas’ 15 year anniversary as a drag king.

With an all-star performance line up, the show closed with THE KING himself, performing the same number he did back in 1996. If you were there, and a lot of you were, it was ah-mazing. If you weren’t-you’re going to regret it.

Following the presentation of card and gift-the stage was filled with performers that Ken affected. There were 30+ people on the stage–and about 75 in the audience.

Ken Vegas-your leadership and dream of providing a space for expression has resulted in our amazing group running in a similar manner. Thank you for opening the door.

Calling all SLUTS

This past Friday, Grena Dean and Private Tails participated in “Slut Night” at Phase 1. It was a fundraiser for Capital Queer Prom and Transgender Health Empowerment. These two Gurlies were joined by E-Cleff (the producer of the show and President and Founder of Capital Queer Prom), Rocky and Sammy Smooth (of the DC Kings) and Oohzee.

An all-star show, with raffles and prizes flowing like the beer on tap. An event you should not miss in the future.

Art=Life RECAP!

The show was BEYOND awesome.

Frankie and Betty turned it out!
Adding Gamz and Dainty to the equation with nudity and paint made it even more amazing!
Follow the art with a smooth drag king, Sean Solid, and you get the performance art better represented!
Next, Myster E did an On The Spot watercolor to Adele’s Someone Like You.
After Randy Ryder discovered his tap shoes–on stage–and couldn’t resist their power.
Then-Mistress Anna Steasya taught us all about the Danger Zone in her sexy Top Gun burlesque act!
Following that lesson, I taught everyone that you can’t get ANYTHING for free–you’ve gotta pay–a lesson by Ruth Brown in If I Can’t sell it, I’ll Sit On It.
Grena Dean followed with a live performance of Electric Chapel by Lady GaGa.
We got some bilingual boy love with Jasfer and Enzo with Promise.
To close out the show, Rocky and I did a duet about love. It started out as solo ballad with only me, then Rocky joined in for a beautiful duet ballad–then I took the spotlight with an upbeat love song that I am addicted to: Countdown by Beyonce.

The whole show ran 1 hr and 45 minutes long, and raised over $500 for the Soundry.
